ABOUT SHALHAV

We are not a traditional tax & law firm offering generalized services in multiple areas. Rather, our firm is distinguished by the commitment to the sole specialization of providing superlative Dutch and international tax & law advice to companies and the private equity industry.

We have extensive skills in all in all aspects of transactions, mergers, demergers and advise both Dutch and foreign companies on all transactional aspects which involve a Dutch and cross-border element. We seamlessly work together with other reputable law firms on the full range of transactions from venture capital investments to setting up of a fund.

Board room advising is at the heart of our practice, and forms the basis of all our core practice areas. We assist a range of Dutch and international clients in all sectors and advise on a broad spectrum of corporate tax work no matter how complex. We are completely independent and are not affiliated to any law firm or accounting firm. We use our extensive knowledge network to provide you with an integrated advice that goes beyond the scope of simply tax. Our independent position allows us to bring in the best specialists for every assignment, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

The firm is also a registered member of the Netherlands order of tax lawyers.

(1973) Tax Lawyer & Founding Partner

Sarig Shalhav (1973) tax lawyer and founding partner, is specialized in all aspects of international tax structuring for multinationals and the private equity industry as tax counsel in M&A, corporate restructuring, and structured finance transactions, with special focus on Israel, US, UK, and Dutch multinational groups. Sarig also has extensive experience with fund formation and carried interest structuring.

Sarig is a member of the Netherlands Order of Tax Advisors (NOB), Israel Bar Association, the International Fiscal Association (IFA) and the EVCA. He is a frequent speaker at seminars on the tax aspects of leveraged buyouts and carried interest planning and has written various articles on fiscal topic.

Head of tax compliance

Maarten studied tax law at the University of Amsterdam.

While he was studying law and after graduating Maarten worked at PWC for a total of 14 years, where he handled tax assessments and was an author and teacher. He obtained a great deal of litigation experience and was also involved in numerous Dutch target-group policy projects.

​

Maarten works as a tax advisor since 2001.

VAT and real estate transfer tax

Esther studied tax law at Leiden University. She specialises in VAT and real estate transfer tax.

Immediately after she graduated in the summer of 1995, Esther joined Mazars Paardekooper Hoffman N.V. as a VAT specialist. She also worked as a VAT specialist at PricewaterhouseCoopers N.V. and at Greenberg Traurig LLP. The experience she gained at those firms enables her to work closely with other advisors and accountants as well as civil- law notaries and lawyers in the Netherlands and abroad.

In addition to studying law, Esther also successfully completed the training courses given by the Dutch Federation of Tax Advisors and the Dutch Association of Tax Advisors (NOB).

Esther provides in-house VAT training, often for clients.

Corporate Lawyer / Tax Advisor 

Saman’s practice primarily focuses on the representation of high-growth companies, their founders and investors, who are forming, scaling and investing in often emerging and disruptive (tech) companies.

Saman has significant experience advising technology and growth companies at all stages of their development on a variety of legal and tax matters, from company formation to liquidity events and all the various types of venture financings and corporate transactions in between including incentive plans, spin-outs, recapitalizations and other corporate reorganizations. He also advises venture capital firms and other institutions investing in technology and growth companies. Speaks Dutch, English and Farsi.

VAT specialist

Koen has been working as a VAT specialist within our team since 2020, after he graduated from his Master’s in Tax law, specializing in Indirect Taxes, at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.

Prior to that, he gained two years of part-time experience with us during his Bachelor's in Law at the University of Amsterdam. In early 2024, Koen successfully completed the professional training program for VAT specialists provided by the Foundation for Tax Advisers (SOB), making him a full member of the Dutch Association of Tax Advisers (NOB).
